St Mary’s honour much loved music teacher

St Mary’s hosted its inaugural Young Pianist of the Year competition this week with students of from Years 6 to 13 performing a varied repertoire.

The competition was held in memory of the School’s Music teacher, Agnes Heron, who passed away in September 2011. Entrants were judged on their performance by well-known Cambridge conductor and pianist, Ralph Woodward.

Joyce M was presented with the Agnes Heron Memorial Cup as winner of the Advanced class and Noa C was awarded the Intermediate class winner shield.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress of St Mary’s, commented: “Agnes Heron’s contribution to the School as Head of Music and as a peripatetic piano teacher is legendary. She was at the School for the best part of 80 years. The introduction of the Agnes Heron Memorial Cup for the Young Pianist of the Year is a fitting tribute to her memory and will ensure that her love of music will continue to inspire St Mary’s girls for many years to come.”

As St Mary’s Young Pianist of the Year, Joyce will be invited to be the concerto pianist in the School’s Summer Gala Concert, performing alongside the Senior Orchestra on stage at the Cambridge University Concert Hall. Noa, as Intermediate class winner will perform at the School’s Chamber Music Concert in the spring term.

Congratulation to our winners and well done to all the girls who performed.
