Royal welcome from St Mary's

St Mary's girls presenting The Queen with her posies

Two days before the Royal Wedding, St Mary’s Senior and Junior Schools welcomed Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Cambridge with a sea of waving flags, bunting and an impressive window displays dedicated to the big day.

The full school lined Bateman Street for the Royal party’s arrival to and departure from the new Sainsbury’s Laboratory in the Botanical Gardens, which The Queen was officially opening. Girls from Years 3, 4 and 7 were lucky enough to form the welcoming committee outside the laboratory and presented her with handmade posies.

The school’s front entrance has been transformed with bunting, red, white and blue streamers, regal souvenirs from former generations and a collage of previous Royal Weddings as a tribute to the Royal Wedding and Visit.

Wafia Z, Year 7 commented: “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I was dancing up and down and really excited!”

“She looked really, really young. I was wondering what moisturiser she uses to make her look so pretty.”

In pride of place in the School’s entrance windows is artwork by a St Mary’s GCSE art student who has dedicated her coursework to images and portraits of The Queen throughout her life. Lisa K, an International Boarding student, wanted to depict the two-sides of her life – her home in South Korea and her schooling in England. She felt that The Queen symbolised what England meant to her and she is thrilled her work is being displayed for the Royal Visit.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress of St Mary’s School, Cambridge, commented: “Our window displays are truly fantastic and the portraits Her Majesty The Queen are an accolade to the fantastic artwork our girls produce here at St Mary’s. We hope that The Queen was able to see them as she drove past our school - we are certainly enjoying the celebrations in the run up to this auspicious occasion.”

The Queen visited the city to officially open the new Sainsbury’s Laboratory in the Botanical Gardens before attending a garden party to mark the 500th anniversary of St John’s College.
