Local triple-jump champion, Laura Samuel, thrilled Junior School students with her speed and impressive jumping skills as she paid a visit to their new School on Chaucer Road.
Miss Samuel has her sights firmly set on The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, after claiming a silver medal in the World Junior Championships 2010 in Canada.
St Mary’s students from Years 3 to 6 were given a triple-jump demonstration by Laura Samuel, who is undertaking a country-wide tour to encourage young people to become involved in sport. The girls took part in a workshop where they practiced their triple-jump techniques under the tutelage of their visitor.
Laura Samuel, commented: “I’ve been working with sports for schools for two and half years now, with the aim to get as many children involved in sports as possible. Whilst doing this it is also raising money for the school helping to get better sporting equipment. The money that is raised also goes towards ‘Action for Children’ as well as helping towards hopeful GB athletes to achieve their goal. Over the past two years I have enjoyed getting involved with the children in various schools and trying to inspire them to go ahead to their local sports clubs. I got involved in athletics through someone coming into my primary school at age 9 and that’s where my journey began, so hopefully it could be the beginning of another child’s sporting career.”
