Ex-student announced as Olympic Torchbearer

St Mary’s was thrilled to welcome back ex-deputy Head Girl, Fiona Sheppard, who has been announced as one of the first London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers.

Fiona, who left the School in 2009, has been named as one of just 27 confirmed participants to take part in the 70 day Olympic Torch Relay. She was nominated through Samsung’s public nomination campaign for her voluntary work with charities that help the homeless, raising money for adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and running a half marathon for an adult hospice amongst other things.

The official announcement was made at St Mary’s School at Fiona’s request. She commented: “Two of my friends from University nominated me for the charity work I take part in. I asked for the announcement to be made at my secondary School, St Mary’s, because this is where my sense of community and charity was instilled in me. I did so much at the School and have really taken that into my adult life. I am so excited to be invited to carry the Olympic Flame and am over the moon to have been given this amazing opportunity.”

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress, added: “We are so delighted for Fiona and this exciting journey she will embark on. At St Mary’s we encourage our girls to be fully involved with whatever community they are part of, be it School, where they live or faith group. It is fantastic to see that Fiona has taken this forward into her adult life and that her hard work is being recognised so highly.”

Next steps for people with an offer of a place today include accepting the date they have been offered to take part in the Torch Relay, providing a copy of the specified documents, confirming their uniform size and any access requirements by 25 January 2012. Every offer of a Torchbearer place is subject to passing the required background checks and final confirmation of becoming a Torchbearer will be communicated by LOCOG by March 2012.
