Eco-Week Comes to St Mary's

Posted in: Latest News

Pupils at St Mary's School, Cambridge, have been cooking, designing buildings, walking to school and donating old clothes as part of an annual week of activities to learn about environmental sustainability.

The special events to mark Eco-Schools Week began on Monday (18 January) with a cookery competition in which girls were asked to create dishes containing as many local ingredients as possible.

Dishes put forward for judging included carrot cake as well as a leek and cheese quiche made with produce grown in the girls' own gardens.

As well as a visit by Dr Hugh Shercliff from Cambridge University on Tuesday (19 January) to talk about what St Mary's students can do to make the school more green, on Wednesday lunchtime a second hand clothes sale saw girls flock to the cortile to bag an eco-friendly bargain.

On Friday any student who uses an environmentally-friendly form of transport to get to school will be rewarded with a cookie at break-time and would-be architects will get the chance to show off their design skills during an eco-architecture design competition.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.
