Junior School Grows Crystals!

Posted in: Latest News

Congratulations to our Year 4 and 5 girls who have been awarded third place in the Eastern Region Crystal Growing Competition 2009. Run by the Royal

Society of Chemistry, the competition tested the girls' practical science skills.

Following the creation of a saturated solution which was transferred into a series of Petri dishes, evaporation revealed the basic crystal. From there, it was a fiddly process of suspending the crystal in more saturated solution and carefully controlling the temperature conditions to encourage the crystal to grow to prize winning proportions. It required some very steady hands to prevent the crystals dropping off their cotton thread sling! The girls monitored the crystal growth with fascination over the subsequent weeks and were thrilled that their hard work was rewarded with third prize.

“I'm so excited, we came third!”- Grace U (Year 5)
