There was excitement in the air yesterday as award winning author and second Children’s Laureate, Anne Fine, officially opened St Mary’s new Junior School building on Chaucer Road.
The opening ceremony was full of smiles, inspirational speeches and a special tea party for students and their families. The afternoon was attended by the Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Ian Nimmo-Smith, along with friends of the School, Governors, parents and staff members. Miss Avery and Mrs O’Sullivan gave attendees a talk on the history of the building and vision for the School. Mrs Wilkinson, Chair of Governors, then thanked everyone involved in the renovation before Anne Fine performed the ribbon cutting.
Anne Fine spent the day at St Mary’s, running workshops with the girls. She said: “It’s always a pleasure to see the cheerful side of education: keen and excited children, splendid new buildings, and happy, willing staff. The girls do so much reading during their school lives. I shall enjoy talking to them about my own profession – writing the books they study in school as well as read at home for pleasure.”
Deirdre O’Sullivan, Headmistress of St Mary’s Junior School, added: “All our girls were so excited to meet Anne Fine and work with her for the day. We are all thrilled with our new home on Chaucer Road and are honoured that Anne agreed to join us to officially mark the opening of this special building.”
The beautiful Victorian building on Chaucer Road has been transformed into an inspiring educational environment with dedicated subject classrooms and excellent outdoor space. Work is also now underway on the new Pre-Prep building, next to the main Junior School, which is anticipated to open in the Summer Term 2012.
