Arts Award

St Mary's was the first independent school in Cambridge to participate in the nationwide Arts Award scheme back in 2005. Three years later, in the academic year 2007-08, 47 girls took part in and passed the Award across the three levels; an impressive 36 students attained Bronze awards, 10 attained Silver, and one student attained the prestigious Gold award. The scheme continues to gain popularity with more and more young people participating and engaging with the arts every year.

The purpose of the Award is to encourage students to pursue their own creative interests through independent learning, as well as working in and for the community and alongside local artists. The Award also aims to promote a love of and appreciation for all art forms – both traditional and cutting-edge.

The projects in which students engage cover a wide range of art forms. Some areas studied in recent students' projects include:

  • Filming and editing techniques
  • Dress-making
  • Modern dance
  • Pointe ballet
  • Musical theatre
  • Photographic portraiture
  • Composition using music technology
  • Fashion journalism
