Ethos and Environment
What happens in the evenings and over the weekends?

There is much on offer at St Mary's. There is an extra-curricular programme run after school on Tuesdays offering a wide range of activities which boarders are expected to join in. In addition, for boarders we also have a dancing class organised by Bodyworks and a craft evening on two nights of the week. Over the weekend, Badminton, tennis, ten pin bowling and yoga are just some of the activities that are also organised for boarders. Sixth Formers are all members of the local fitness centre which they are expected to attend once over the weekend.

We also take advantage of all that Cambridge has to offer - the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle's Yard are just two examples of the wonderful museums that can be visited. Concerts, the theatre and the cinema are all popular local activities, along with punting, walking to Grantchester and the Botanic Gardens. Many outings end up with a traditional tea at the Orchard Tearooms or Fitzbillies.

We also go further afield to places like Norwich and Ely (where tours of the Cathedral are arranged), London, the Norfolk coast, the ice-skating rink in Peterborough and Birmingham for the ever-popular annual clothes show. We will take the interests of the students into account - if it is suggested and is within reason, we will organise it!

Common Rooms

As with the kitchens, there are three common rooms, two for the upper School and one for the lower school. All are large and airey (the Sixth Form common room has wonderful views over Cambridge and the Botanic Gardens) and the students can use these whenever they wish during their free time at the end of the school day. Enjoying a DVD and pizza is a popular pastime.

Boarders may also have access to other school facilities during the evening and the weekend such as the library, music practice rooms and the art studio. We make use of the cookery room, gym, tennis courts and the gardens, especially in the summer. Boarders must adhere to the age categories set for DVDs and all films stored on laptops and movie players. For example, those below 15 must not watch films classified as 15. Legal age restrictions also apply to boarders who are going to the cinema.
