Sixth Form

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Duke of Edinburgh Award group in the Lake District

There is a thriving Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme group at school. Opportunities exist for all girls to participate. An amazing number of students seize this opportunity and gain a qualification which is valued by universities and employers alike.

Silver Award

Most students will have completed the Silver Award in Year 11. However, those who have not may do it in the Lower Sixth.

Gold Award

Those who have already completed Silver start immediately on the Gold Award in the Lower Sixth. A practice expedition is followed at Easter by a final one a little later and it is the hardest but most rewarding aspect of the Gold award. In the summer, students follow a skill, offer a service, participate in a physical activity and join a residential project. Many go to Lourdes. It is quite usual for students to complete Gold in the Sixth Form, occasionally by the end of the Lower Sixth.

“I felt really proud when I went to Buckingham Palace to receive my award from the Duke of Edinburgh.” Sixth Former

International Gold

The following extract was written by a 6th form international student taking part in a Gold D of E expedition:

“I still couldn’t believe that I had actually done it, these were things that I would never expect myself doing if I am studying in Hong Kong. Being so close to the nature, for example, standing on the top of the mountains and look at the scenery down the hills, crossing over the fields where there were cows, sheep or horses, passing through different styles of fences, gates or barries between fields, etc., are things that people can rarely experience in my busy and crowded hometown. These are wonderful experiences that I will never forget for my whole life, the pictures are in my mind, the excitements and all the complicated feelings will be kept in my heart. I had had a fantastic time with my groups in these 2 expeditions.”
