Careers Guidance

Your Sixth Form course will give you the foundation academically and personally to embark on your future. During this time you will need to take major decisions about Higher Education (HE) and career options.

At St Mary’s you will find everything you need to explore possibilities and reach informed conclusions. Our students also have the opportunity to attend ISCO Information days organised in a range of professions and businesses.

Through a system of readily accessible information and advice, we aim to give you the confidence and ability to meet the challenge of a rewarding career in the 21st century!

Information and Guidance

The first step is to find out what you need to know! Advice is at hand from tutors, subject staff and the Careers department with expertise provided by ISCO. There are computers in the Careers Library and the Sixth Form Study Room, all with broadband Internet access and links to careers sites via the school’s Hot Links — it’s all there, information about UCAS, university online prospectuses, the ISCO site, courses, careers and gap year information!

Careers Library

St Mary’s has a well–stocked Careers Library with general and specialised information about Careers and Higher Education — from decision–making to student finance. It is also useful to try diagnostic computer programs, which are always available on the computers in the Careers Library. Try Kudos for career ideas, Careerscape for career information, Higher Ideas for courses to suit your subjects, Exodus for career opportunities abroad and ISCO for a series of careers programs.

There are two sets of HE prospectuses, one for reference and one to borrow. Among our resources we have the invaluable Degree Course Guides, What Graduates Do.

Sixth Form Study Room

The Sixth Form Study Room has a good collection of university prospectuses and a range of books. Most of the information you will need as you research universities can be found here.
